What is a XIP file?
An XIP file is more of an old version of ZIP files. They are XAR archives that are compressed using the GNU format. The files contain dates, time as well as certificates for the archives. They hold one or more zipped files with a digital signature. Mostly, you could say that an XIP file is a ZIP file that is digitally signed. This signature ensures that no changes have taken place since its creation. Initially, some rogue users would tamper with Xcode downloads by installing dangerous codes that would tamper with the user’s computer. XIP keeps the file from hard disk errors as well as third party damages. You can use XIP files by Apple for saving Xcode downloads for Mac systems. XIP files are, therefore, exclusive to Mac users to expand them from the archive command. This does not require an Archive utility. Today; you may not come across XIP files as Apple stopped its use.
