What is a WMV file?
Developed by Microsoft, the WMV (Windows Media Video) is an ASF-based (Microsoft Advanced Systems Format) video file. It is a proprietary Windows format that has been compressed with Windows Media compression. It is a part of the Windows Media framework and is amongst the most common form to store video files.
Even though you will find most of the WMV files with ASF format, users can also pack them using Matroska or AVI container format. These files are not capable of holding images, but they can contain a series of them in the form of a slideshow. The Windows Media Player 9 to support the format officially, but you can still access these files using other video players.
