What is a WEBP file?
Developed by Google, it uses the WEBP extension to store WebP raster images to use them for its web graphics. The idea of it is based on a type developed by On2 Technologies, which the tech giant acquired in 2009. It is RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format)-based and first came in the scene in the year 2010.
The WEBP format is similar to PNG in many ways. It has support for both lossy and lossless content and includes an alpha channel for improved transparency. Currently, most web browsers and image editors support it and can edit its content. One of its most significant advantages is that it is an upgrade over the commonly used JPEG extension i.e., it stores the same image in better or similar quality while occupying lesser space.
