What is a WAD file?
Doom’s Bible states that WAD stands for “Where’s All The Data?” The file stores all game data for Doom and Doom II as well as first-person shooter games on Doom’s Engine. It contains a directory, header, and every data lump necessary for the files inside. Data in-store include the game’s texture, player level, graphics, maps, and all other details needed for a memorable gaming experience. Heretic, Hexen, Quake, Half-Life and Doom games are just a few of those that use WAD files.
These files are available two in categories, namely IWAD and PWAD. IWAD (Internal WAD) is used for loading all original game contents for the engine needed to run a game. PWAD (Patch WAD) or optional files, on the other hand, are files for replacing data from the loaded IWAD or adding extra data to the engine. For a long time, WAD files were mainly used game files.
