What is a VTT file?

VTT files are text-based files embedded in the WebVTT (Web Video Text Track) format. These files are better known as subtitles, caption, descriptions, metadata, or other text-based information in relation to the video file. WebVTT was put in place in 2010 to replace its predecessor, WebSRT (Web Subtitle Resource Tracks) to support HTML5 video files. WebVTT files are used with many online video hosting services such as Youtube, Vimeo, and Dailymotion. It allows additional information to be added, such as frame placement, styling, and comments. WebVTT files have two required components and many optional components. They are required to be at the beginning of a transcript and to have a blank line between each caption frame to indicate the sequence’s completion. Optional components include byte mark orders (BOM), a header to the right of the WebVTT, comments, a sequence number, positioning information, a timecode, cue settings, and track tags.
