What is a VHD file?
VDH files are virtual hard disks that may contain multiple images used by Microsoft Windows Virtual PC, a Windows virtualization program. VDH files store the content of a hard disk that is contained within a virtual machine. This will typically include the disk partitions, files, and file systems, as well as folders. VHD files can also be used to install multiple operating systems on a particular computer, test a software program, or utilize older archived applications – objects that are usually contained in a physical HDD – or hard disk drive. The VHD Image Format Specification was made available to the public in June of 2005 and the VHDX format – the new, more advanced extension version of the original VHD format – was introduced in 2012. Both file formats were made available to the public with a royalty-free license. VHDX format saved virtual hard disks are stored in .VHDX files instead of .VHD.
