What is a TTF file?
TTF stands for True Type Font by Apple for Mac OS X and Windows users. It is a raster font format that is used in resizing fonts without altering its pixel quality. They are the best in printing businesses because the screen vs printed versions are both high quality. The files comprise of mathematical outlines of each letter. To spot a TTF file on a Mac computer, look for a document-like icon that features a dog’s ear on the upper left with three A’s on it. On a Windows computer, it is stored on the system or fonts folder.
While Apple first developed TTF files, Microsoft acquired the idea and broadened the specifications. Windows TTF files would later support smart rendering and PostScript gyphs. With more specifications than Apple’s, it became OpenType with more tables. Apple felt challenged and added more tables to its TTF files allowing various smart rendering systems, which is where Apple Advanced Typography font specification was born.
