What is a SYS file?

SYS file is a Windows System File. Microsoft Corporation developed it. It’s used by Microsoft DOS (Disk Operating System) and Microsoft Windows Operating Systems to perform activities like storing data about the device drivers on a computer. It contains system settings, variables, and information needed to run the Windows Operating System effectively.
SYS files are mainly Windows files, but they can be used on Mac systems with Windows. These files are opened by Microsoft Windows in Windows and parallel Desktop for Mac. The files are prone to viruses. Therefore, it’s essential to check them before opening them.
Config sys is the most common sys file. It stores system variables and configuration settings for Windows and DOS and specifies the device drivers to be loaded. Other SYS files include country sys and keyboard sys.
SYS files are stored in Windows /System32 and /SysWOW64. These files are usually hidden and only accessible as read-only files to users.
