What is a SMI file?
Developed by Apple, the Apple Disk Copy, or Aladdin ShrinkWrap, used the SMI (Self-Mounting Disk Image) extension. It is compatible with Mac OS Classic, i.e., v9 or earlier, and contains a disk image visible to the user when he mounts the disk onto his PC. The primary motive of developing the format was to enable downloading floppy disks and CDs contents digitally.
These, when double-clicked, will load a virtual disk on the user’s computer. DMG has replaced the SMI extension, and it is no longer in use.
