What is a POTX file?

.Potx, zip data files, are templates formed by Microsoft PowerPoint to aid users in making slide-show presentations for office assignments and other projects. It allows users to create multiple copies of .PPTX files and save them for later use by using the included professionally pre-populated templates or the multiple styles and layouts, text options, and other settings to allow users to create their presentations in the style and format that they need. These files are saved in the standard format of Open XML, introduced with the development of Microsoft Office 2007. .Potx files were developed to replace .POT files, files saved in a binary format up until 2003 that were to be used by the original PowerPoint 97. Documents are identified as XMLs by appending “X” in their file extensions. As zip files, the content type for parts contained within the package can easily be accessed by renaming the file name with zip.
