What is a NSF file?
The NES extension refers to an NES Sound Format file that stores music from an original Nintendo game and related NES systems. These files are similar to PSID format and allow the sound to be played even before the game loads. It has the audio and a small header, enabling any NSF player to insert it at the right place and prepare the hardware to play it.
The NSF comes in two variants –
• NSFe – contains a playlist with details of track times and titles, along with other metadata
• NSF2 is a backward-compatible variant with NSFe’s elements and other additional data to accommodate it in the previous software versions.
