What is a MTS file?

The MTS (MPEG Transport Stream) extension stores video files in Advanced Video Coding High Definition (AVCHD) format. Sony and Panasonic jointly developed the AVCHD codec in 2006, and it has since featured in numerous camcorders as their default video extension.
These files use MPEG-4 or H.264 compression to store videos and are capable of shooting in 720p or 1080p resolution. For audio, it employs the Dolby AC-3 for compression or PCM when there is no such reduction required.
