What is a MTL file?

MTL files are material setting objects utilized by 3D objects editing files like Autodesk Maya and adobe photoshop. The files are stored alongside an OBJ file and explain how programs should apply textures to the object. MTL file consists of names of texture bitmaps file to apply to an object and the 3D coordinates to use. Material files are also stored in ASCII format and use. Mtl extension.
OBJ files usually reference more than one file, while MTL files can reference more than one texture. Therefore, as a user, you can with ease, apply multiple textures to the same object. These files are saved in plain text format, hence allow users to open and edit them in an existing text editor. Some of these include notepad, TextEdit, and atom. Unfortunately, you can’t open these MTL files in 3D object applications like Adobe photoshop, and Autodesk Maya even though they are used in creating them.
