What is a MPG file?

The MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) uses the MPG format as a standard for storing digital video files. It contains audio, video, and metadata intertwined together and is often a reference format for creating and distributing movies online.
The MPG format uses the MPEG-1 or its improvement, the MPEG-2 for compressing the audio and the video in the file. These are saved in program stream container format, known as PS or MPEG-PS for more efficient transmission.
