MIME File

Category: Encoded Files

What is a MIME file?

MIME stands for Multi-Purpose Internet Mail. MIME file extensions are encoded files created by The Internet Engineering Taskforce. The files are in binary format. Email programs are the main users of these files. The encoded data present in the file is in 8-bit nature rather than the normal 7-bit option used in other email messages. The data also contains characters apart from the US ASCII character set. Additionally, they also work with non-text emails like videos, audios, and images as well as emails with more than one part. The essence of this file is to increase the carrying capacity of emails. It entails file attachment rather than ordinary characters. The decoding of the file requires a file decompression utility. Decoding is only used when the email program does not recognize the file. Otherwise, most email programs are able to interpret the files. MIME files often contain the .MIM file extension.
