What is a M4A file?
Developed by Apple, the M4A file extension uses the MPEG-4 container format to store audio content. It follows either the ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) or AAC (Advanced Audio Codec) encoding and can host songs, podcasts, ,and other audio types. Initially, the format came into life to clear the confusion between the MPEG-4 audio and MPEG-4 video files.
With Apple’s iTunes store churning out songs in M4A format, it has become quite popular amongst users. They use the AAC encoding to keep the file size in check, and they employ the M4P extension for copyright-protected files.
