What is a LNK file?

LNK, or LiNK, files are binary formatted files used by Microsoft Windows as convenient routes to quickly access the original file. LNK files – commonly termed, shortcuts – were established in 1995 with the introduction of the Windows 95 program and they can be identified by a curled arrow overlay icon, even if “Hide Extensions for Known File Types” is disabled. Shortcuts can be extensions of a file, folder, or applications and by right-clicking on those particular shortcuts, you will be able to view the original file type, the location, filename, program(s) that you have available to open the target file, a shortcut option, and much more. LNK files that are extensions of .EXE, or program, files are able to identify the program’s attributes. LNK files are often used by forensic investigators to acquire metadata about any files that were accessed, even files that were deleted after they were accessed.
