What is a LAS file?
Developed by ASPRS (American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing), the LAS extension refers to files in the LIDAR data-exchange file format. These are binary data files that were an answer to the proprietary LIDAR file format everyone was trying to develop. It was also an attempt to overcome some of the inherent issues with that format.
A LAS file stores Light Sensing and Ranging data captured by optical remote sensors and allows smooth exchange of such data between providers and consumers.
