What is an JNG file?
Created as an adjunct to the MNG file format originally, the JNG is now capable of being a standalone extension. It is similar to a PNG format but is a lossy format with compression similar to JPGs. It is primarily used for network and internet distribution.
A JNG stores a JPG in an 8-bit or 12-bit format for color and occasionally also includes an alpha channel for transparency. A JNG can also save two JPEGs for more color accuracy (one 8-bit and another 12-bit). It allows those decoders which do not want to handle the twelve-bit datastreams to present the other one, if available.
