What is an IGES file?
IGES files are data files that exchange 2Dor 3D design information between CAD programs like; ACD system canvas, and Autodesk AutoCAD. Data files stored in IGES standard are saved as IGES or.IGS. The files contain surface information for the model. They can store solid medal, wireframe, and circuit diagram information. IGES files are saved in ASCII text format, based on the initial graphics exchange specification (IGES) standard. Unfortunately, there has been a decline in the utilization of IGES format starting from the late 1990s. This is because of the release of more advanced formats like parsolid and STEP. Most CAD programs can open IGES files and also convert them into other formats. For windows, some of these programs include Autodesk fusion 360, ideaMK IGS viewer, and CADsoftTool viewer. The files can also be opened in text editors like Microsoft WordPad in windows and apple TextEdit when saved in text format. However, the files’ content will appear as text rather than the visual representation of a part.
