What is a VICAR file?
VICAR (Video Image Communication and Retrieval) has been developed by the NASA Jet propulsion Laboratory for storing images taken by its spacecraft on a mission. A file in this format consists of two parts, labels and image area. The label contains the description and image’s location throughout its existence.
The image area comprises the actual file. VICAR was developed in 1966 primarily for storing multidimensional imaging data. With time it has expanded into biological image processing and geological exploration. The VICAR Core is so versatile that they decided to open it for public use and is now available on GitHub. It has most popularly been used in the Vikings Orbiter and Cassini-Huygens.
