What is a DVI file?
A DVI file is a device-independent file format associated with TeX-based programs, such as LaTeX. Designed by David R. Fuchs and implemented by Donald E. Knuth in 1982, these contain binary data that stores the typesetting information that the program wants to send to the printer. These files mostly act as input to other software.
PostScript and PDF are similar to DVI file format, but the latter doesn’t support form embedding in any form whatsoever, i.e. if the user wants to preview the file or print it, he must have the font installed on his device. Further, it doesn’t support any graphics, other than the black-and-white boxes.
