What is a DOC file?

Created by Microsoft, the DOC file extension was once trendy, and MS-Word used it, and so did many other text editors, such as Apple Pages and OpenOffice Writer. It stores the content in binary files and may contain text, images, audio, graphs, charts, page formatting, and other information.
The DOC file format first came into the scene in 1983, when Microsoft chose it to be the official MS-Word extension. Its binary variant was introduced in Word 97, and DOCX subsequently replaced it in 2007 with the introduction of MS-Word 2007. The later uses the Open XML format and is very popular even in the present days. The DOC format is no longer in use, and you can convert them to DOCX easily via any text editor.
