What is a DNG file?
Developed by Adobe Systems, the DNG (Digital Negative) format is a universal RAW image format for storing pictures. It is a patented, but open extension which the corporation allows others to use free of cost, but with the condition that the licensee much display the fact that it is licensed from Adobe. It was first launched in the year 2004 and is based on the TIFF/EP format and relies heavily on metadata information.
A DNG comprises the raw image and metadata which allows most software to access it without knowing anything about the camera that shot it. Users can also find a preview image in the JPEG format attached to the file at times. Many manufacturers adopted the extension initially but have moved to some other extension for multiple reasons, and its availability is a mixed affair currently.
