What is a CGI file?
Common Gateway Interface or CGI files are web server scripts that create dynamic pages. It uses Perl, sometimes called C programming language or other such as Unix Shell Scripts and Fortran. You can find them on the web directories of web servers. Any changes to be made are only possible if not pre-compiled. On normal conditions, .cgi files are in text form. However, through programs such as Perl, they can be used as executable files under some circumstances. You can use CGI scripts to run general web instructions. It could be when sending an email from a web form or circulating ads within a website. Basically, whenever a user sends a URL, it prompts AOLserver to involve CGI in running a program. Soon after, the AOLserver sends input from the user to the program, then output from the program and back again to the user. What CGI does here is playing the gateway role between the AOLserver and the user’s program.
