What is an AAC file?
The Advanced Audio Coding File, AAC file, is a lossy compressed audio file that is similar to the MP3 file but has better performance at the same bit rate. The better performance is due to the AAC being based on a modified discrete cosine transform whereas MP3 is based on the modified discrete cosine transform and the fast Fourier transform. The improvement in the AAC file is a higher coding efficiency, simpler filterbank, more efficient handling of frequencies above 16 kHz, and keeps the quality almost identical to the original audio file. The AAC is the default encoding in Apple iTunes, and It is the standard for iPhones, iPad, Nintendo 3DS, and much more.
