What is a VDI file?
Developed by Sun Microsystems and owned by Oracle, its VM VirtualBox, an open-source desktop virtualization software, uses the VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) extension. It is a binary format and belongs to the disk image category.
Users can mount these on their hard disk, and these are compatible across platforms. It enables users to run software curated for some other OS in a constrained, but high-speed environment. It is a proprietary container format and stores a host of data in a virtual disk.
