What is a JKS file?

Files with the .JKS file extension is a security file that stores sets of cryptographic keys or certificates in the binary JKS – Java Keystore – format. This file format typically requires a password to access because it is an encrypted security file and contains sensitive data. JKS files are available for the use of developers for multiple reasons, such as SSL encryption, or even the developer of an Android app. Files with the .KEYSTORE file extension uses the JKS files for the storage of cryptographic keys and certificates, particularly authorization certificates and public-key certificates. JKS files work with keytool, a program manufactured by Sun Microsystems, inc that is designed to manage keys and certificates. This allows the user to produce their own public or private certificates to use in authentication, self-authentication, data integration, and developing digital signatures as well as cache the public keys of associates in the form of certificates.
