CPGZ File

Category: Compressed Files

What is an CPGZ file?

CPGZ is the default format used for compression. The method of unzipping files is creating a new zip file with the zip.cpgz extension then returning the contents to the zip file. Then, it opens the CPGZ archive – recreating the zip file again – decompresses it, and returns it to the zip.cpgz extension. This is the result of the system being unsure of the type of zip compression that was used. Because it is unsure, the program will attempt to compress the file instead of decompressing, but it does not stop. When a CPGZ file is applied to a Compressed UNIX CPIO Archive file – Copy In, Copy Out – the system attempts to compress the file, assuming that it’s the desired result. Because the file is already compressed, it will decompress the file – creating a new zip – archive the new zip in the zip.cpgz, and continue to repeat the process infinitely.
