What is a MD5 file?

Md5 file is a checksum file, used in verifying the integrity of a disc, disc image or a downloaded file. It uses an algorithm based on the number of bits a file should contain. A checksum is a value created from an algorithm. Being a text file, Md5 file can be opened by a text editor and holds no meaning by itself. Standard checksum files are 32 characters long and require 16 bytes or 128 bits. Checksum files ensure that data within files is complete and hasn’t been corrupted. Md5 file operates like a human fingerprint; very unique, and it’s used to verify identity. This is important for security purposes in case the file is changed for malicious purposes, corrupted form or incurs incomplete disk error. The file format is used by ISO BUSTER CD/DVDs copying software, to verify the integrity of copies it creates. Lastly, it’s not suitable for files like SSL certificate programs or digital signature file creation software.
