What is an EDI file?

The use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) dates back to the 70s and is available in many standards such as CSV, xCBL,cXML, and EDIFACT, among others. The files contain data created by one of these EDI standards. The text information inside is used in exchanging relevant business documents between companies in a standard electronic format. The standard format is necessary, so the receiving computer can read and understand the contents within. In short, it creates one language. Initially, companies would do so offline, which was not only costly but also time-consuming. They also had more errors compared to this option. Today, Edi files have pushed out B2B forms of communication, such as email, fax, and post-mail. These files help describe every part of the message and the format, such as a document type, required action, decimal, integer, and the likes. These could be invoices, shipping status, inventory documents as well as confirmation of payments.
