What is a GEDCOM file?
Gedcom file is an acronym of Genealogical Data Communication. This file was originally developed in 1985 and is managed and owned by ”the family history department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.’ GEDCOM file format exchanges genealogical data between different genealogy software and websites. It’s a known file format standard for creating and formatting family data into a text file. Also, it’s a plain text either UTF.8, ANSEL, or ASCI containing genealogical information about individuals with metadata linking to the records. Most genealogy software supports exporting to and importing from Gedcom format. The .ged extension is used as a suffix to indicate that you’ve formatted a file using GEDCOM data specification. Most genealogical programs are aware of this extension; hence you can easily move your tree to the genealogical programs of your choosing. You can open .ged files on windows, Linux, and Mac, as there are several programs that enable this.
