What is a CAB file?
A Cabinet file or CAB file, formerly called diamond files are a set of archive files that are compressed in a computer. They store data from drivers or system files related installations. Each compression is stored in one folder. There is usually more than one folder in a cab file. When saving a large cab file, the left-out data is stored in the folder next to it. This enables multiple data storage and easy transmission from one computer to another via email. You can only compress files of up to 2GB, and you are not allowed to add or delete existing records in a cab folder. They support Quantum, LZX, DEFLATE, and ZIP compressions and can be used in Microsoft installation engines such as Set up API, advpack, and device installer. Before cab files began compressing files and minimizing download time, they were used for compressing software in disks. Cab files are also responsible for enhancing speeds during downloads.
