What is a XMP file?

Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is an Adobe file extension. It contains metadata for images, websites, or database files. When using software such as Photoshop or bridge to edit a picture, all the raw data such as CR2 or NEF is stored in this format. Each edit made is collected in real-time and can be viewed on an XMP compatible device. However, some third-party software can also do the trick. These files are used for storing all vital information such as author, keyword, title, file description, copyright information, and so much more. All this data is kept safe should any crushing occur, and you can also share changes made between catalogs. Photoshop images create multiple XMP file extensions when opened. If you prefer compressed XMP files for all photos, save the first image in DNG format. Should you accidentally delete the file, every change made on the image will be lost.
