Developed by Matroska, the MKV (Matroska Multimedia Container) belongs to the video filegroup and comes in a binary format. It was released in December 2002 and is an open-source format similar to AVI and MOV formats. These files support numerous audio and video codecs and have support for subtitles too.
Users generally come across MKV format while watching short clips, TV shows, or movies.
