What is a DOCX file?

If there is one file type that most people will associate wit, it has to be the DOCX extension. Created by Microsoft, it is a format that stores documents created by MS-Word or any other similar word editor. The Microsoft Word Open XML replaced the once-popular DOC format and first came into limelight in 2007. It was the year when MS-Word was released.

The primary difference between a DOC and a DOCX file is that the former uses the binary format to store information whereas the latter does so in the Open XML format. It generally keeps text but is also capable of storing images, drawings, and other objects. If you dive inside the DOCX file, you will find the XML files and three additional folders docProps, Word, and _rels used for storing the properties, content, and relationships respectively.
