What is a RTF file?

Developed by Microsoft in 1987, the RTF is a commonly found file format capable of supporting rich text. The extension has received a lot of upgrades over the year until the company stopped it altogether in 2008. RTFs can store a wide variety of text formattings such as different font types, bold, italics, and several custom tab settings.
The reason why RTF extension was so popular was due to its ability to hold images and objects within the text file. It supported PNG and JPG files, which meant that it could store both lossy and lossless formats. It saves all of the information in ASCII combined with additional formatting. Since it is from Microsoft itself, it allows smooth transition and interoperability between the OS and word processor you are using.
