Designed by Avid Technolgy, TARGA file extension belongs to the raster graphics category and is used by Truevision. The format name is an acronym which stands for Truevision Advanced Raster Graphics Adapter and supports 8, 16, 24, or 32 bits per pixel. It includes a maximum of 24-bits for RGB and an 8-bit alpha channel.
The format was initially developed as a high-end image file format for Truevision’s line of graphics display cards. With time its popularity rose, and it has since found uses in multiple platforms and applications. Presently, many high-end CAD programs also employ it due to its ability to store a wide gamut of images such as postage stamps, gamma value, color maps, and others.
