What is a SGI file?

Developed at Silicon Graphics, the SGI file format is a native graphics format used by its workstations. It is a binary format raster image file which can store anything between 8 to 32-bits per pixels. These files are similar to RGB format images and support RLE (Run-Length Encoding) for limiting the file size. It is a bitmap capable of storing black and white, grayscale, and color images.
