What is a PTEX file?

Developed by Walt Disney Animation Studios in the late 2000s, PTEX file extension finds its use in the Ptex software. The program is a texture mapping system that renders animations in movies and advertisements. A PTEX file contains numerous textures and minimaps and data that aids in filtering the index blocks correctly.
A PTEX files consist of several data blocks such as header, extended header, face info, constant data, and other information. Due to these, Ptex software doesn’t require UV assignment. It can apply a separate texture to each index block or polygon mesh. We first saw its use in the short movie Giago’s Guest released in 2008, and it was used in a full-length film named Bolt too. It has since been a staple in all the movies that come out of the Walt Disney Animation Studios.
