What is a JP2 file?
JP2 or JPEG 2000 is a state-of-the-art compression technique which was developed in the late 1990s by Joint Photography Experts Group (JPEG). The primary reason for its development was to replace the old JPEG format. It can support any color bit depth, and you can compress it via either the lossy or the lossless techniques.
It is built using the Wavelet tech, which allows it to code lossless content in any quality without sacrificing on the coding aspect of it. Its precision is as high as 38-bits/sample, and it has up to 16384 diverse components to ensure the same takes place efficiently. It is so scalable that you can store different parts of a single image in varying qualities.
Its qualities ensure that we do not use it only for digital images or medical photos, but also in more demanding sectors such as surveillance, broadcast media, cinema, and many others. There are multiple software, including the default ones which can open JP2 images conveniently.
