What is a JBIG file?
The Joint Bi-level Group has developed the JBIG file extension, and it is a predecessor of the JBIG2 file format. It stores a bitonal image in a 1-bit black and white pixel format. Coming from the Raster category of image files, you can compress it more than CCITT Group algorithm, and it is useful for fax transmissions.
It was subsequently replaced by JBIG2 format due to the latter’s ability to compress images more efficiently. Images in the JBIG format can also carry the JBG file extension sometimes. Nevertheless, it is no longer in use and is considered obsolete in the present day.
