What is a XPI file?

XPI file is a compressed installation archive. It’s used by various Mozilla applications like Firefox, Thunderbird, and also sea money. XPI files also contain software browser plugin, theme, or extension. Mozilla uses a component called XPI install. The component comprises of Mozilla installer scripts to install an XPI package. These files may include containing images and JS, RDF, MANIFEST, and CSS files and multiple folders containing other data. Since the files are zip compressed, you can manually extract the content of the files by renaming an XPI file into a .zip compression utility; For example, WinZip 7.zip or Apple Archive utility. To install the local version of the file, you need and drop an open Firefox browser on windows. Alternatively, you can use the Firefox file, or open the menu command.
Often the XPI file is downloaded through Firefox after searching new add-ons, and it automatically installs itself. It then becomes available after the restart of the browser.
