What is a CR3 file?
Developed by Canon, some selected digital cameras from the organization use the CR3 (Canon Raw 3) extension. It is a proprietary format that allows the organization to distinguish itself from the rest. It is the successor or the CR2 and is based in the CIFF format instead of the TIFF-based latter.
The company introduced the format in 2018 alongside the release of Canon EOS M50. The format stores binary data and uses the ISO Base Media File and customs tags with crx codec. It can store both lossy and lossless data (C-RAW and Raw, respectively), and the former takes up to 40 percent lower space without losing out much on details.
