What is a 3DS file?
The 3DS image file format is used by Autodesk 3D studio. It contains elements like mesh data, bitmap references, material attributes, viewport configurations, smoothing group data, camera locations, lightning formation, and mapping parameters. These files are used to transfer 3D models amongst different 3D software applications
3DS files consists of blocks of data known as chunks and contains ID and length description. Each chunk contains an identifier and length parameter that shows the location of the next main data block. Additionally, they store the shapes and lightning. 3DS files are stored in a binary form. This allows files to load faster, and reduce the size of the text-based files of the same nature. Unfortunately, 3DS files have been replaced by .MAX files, which are a newer and better version of 3Dmax software.
The files can be opened with any version of Autodesk 3ds Max, which is available on the Microsoft Windows platform.
